What Is Split-Phase Power?
Split-phase power is a wiring system that provides two voltages from a single transformer: 120V and 240V. It works by using two "hot" wires (L1 and L2), each carrying 120V relative to neutral, but 180 degrees out of phase with each other. The voltage between L1 and L2 is 240V.
Think of it like a seesaw: neutral is the pivot point. L1 pushes 120V in one direction, L2 pushes 120V in the opposite direction. Between L1 and L2, you get 240V.
Split-phase is standard in North America (USA and Canada) and in regions that adopted North American electrical standards. It is NOT standard in Iraq, UAE, Oman or most of the Middle East, which use 230V single-phase and 400V three-phase.

Why Split-Phase Matters for Backup Systems
If your customer has 120V appliances
If a customer has imported appliances from the USA (120V), they need either a step-down transformer or a split-phase inverter that provides 120V output. A standard 230V inverter cannot power 120V appliances without a transformer.
If you are exporting to North American markets

If the customer has a mixed-voltage installation

The key difference is not just voltage — it is the entire wiring philosophy:
120/240V split-phase (North America)

- Frequency: 60 Hz

Can You Use a Split-Phase Inverter on a 230V System?
Generally, no. A split-phase inverter outputs 120V on each leg and 240V between legs. A 230V single-phase system expects 230V on a single live wire relative to neutral. The voltages do not match, and connecting them can damage equipment.
However, some advanced inverters can be configured for either mode. The SH-Inverter split-phase models can be configured for 120/240V split-phase or 230V single-phase output, making them versatile for multi-market distributors.
The Frequency Trap
Even if the voltage matches, the frequency matters:
- 50 Hz appliances on 60 Hz: Usually safe. Motors run slightly faster. Transformers run slightly cooler.
- 60 Hz appliances on 50 Hz: Often dangerous. Motors run slower and overheat. Transformers saturate and overheat. Electronics with frequency-dependent circuits may fail.
Always match the inverter output frequency to the appliance's rated frequency.

You need a split-phase inverter only if: (1) your customer has 120V appliances, (2) you are exporting to a 120V market, or (3) the installation site has split-phase electrical service. For 95%+ of Middle East installations, a standard 230V single-phase or 400V three-phase inverter is the correct choice.
