China produces the vast majority of the world's lithium batteries, and most are good quality from reputable factories. But the market also has traders pretending to be factories, factories using second-grade cells, and suppliers who disappear after taking your deposit. Here are seven red flags that should make you walk away.
Red Flag 1: Price 30%+ Below Market
If a supplier quotes a price that is dramatically lower than the market average, something is wrong. The most common explanations:
- Second-grade or recycled cells: Cells that failed factory QC but were diverted to the grey market instead of being recycled
- Under-specced capacity: A "10 kWh" battery that actually contains 7-8 kWh of cells
- Missing components: No BMS, no balancing, no temperature sensors — just cells in a box
- Bait and switch: Low price to get the order, then "quality upgrade" surcharges added later
A good rule: if the price seems too good to be true, the cells are either recycled, under-capacity, or both. The cost of a failed battery in the field (warranty claim, customer loss, reputation damage) far exceeds the savings.
Red Flag 2: No Factory Tour (Video or In-Person)
A real factory will let you visit — either in person or via a live video call. If the supplier refuses, makes excuses, or only sends pre-recorded marketing videos, they are likely a trading company pretending to be a manufacturer.
What to look for on a factory tour:
- Actual production lines (not just an office)
- Cell storage area (temperature-controlled, organised)
- BMS assembly and testing station
- Finished goods QC area with test equipment
- Date codes on cells (to verify they are not old stock)
Red Flag 3: Cannot Provide UN38.3 Test Report
UN38.3 is a mandatory safety test for shipping lithium batteries. Every legitimate manufacturer has this test report for each battery model. If the supplier cannot provide it within 48 hours, or sends a report that does not match the battery model you are buying, walk away.
Check that the UN38.3 report:
- Matches the exact battery model (not a similar one)
- Is issued by a recognised testing lab (TUV, SGS, Intertek, etc.)
- Is less than 2 years old
- Includes all 8 test items (T.1 through T.8)
Red Flag 4: Vague or Missing BMS Specifications
The BMS is the most critical component in a LiFePO₄ battery. If the supplier cannot tell you:
- What BMS chipset/brand is used
- Whether balancing is active or passive
- What the temperature cutoffs are
- What communication protocol is used (CAN, RS485)
- How many temperature sensors are in the pack
...then they are either using the cheapest BMS available or they do not know (because they are not actually manufacturing the battery). Either way, the BMS will fail in the field.
Red Flag 5: No Sample Unit Available
A supplier who refuses to sell 1-2 sample units for testing is not a supplier you want to commit 100+ units to. Samples are the cheapest insurance you can buy.
When you receive a sample:
- Test actual capacity (discharge at 0.2C, measure total energy delivered)
- Open the enclosure and inspect cell brand, BMS quality, welding quality
- Check weight (underweight = fewer cells or smaller cells)
- Run 5-10 charge/discharge cycles and check for capacity retention
- Test BMS communication with your inverter
Red Flag 6: Pushy Sales Tactics and Rushed Timelines
Be wary of suppliers who:
- Pressure you to place an order "today" because "prices are going up tomorrow"
- Refuse to put pricing in writing with a 30-day validity
- Ask for 50%+ deposit before production (standard is 30%)
- Will not sign a formal purchase contract with quality clauses
- Have no after-sales contact beyond the salesperson's WhatsApp
A good supplier is patient, transparent and willing to work through your due diligence process. They want long-term partnerships, not one-off transactions.
Red Flag 7: No References or Track Record
Ask for references from other customers (ideally in your region). A supplier with no export experience to the Middle East may not understand:
- Documentation requirements for Iraqi/Omani/UAE customs
- Heat and dust considerations for product design
- Payment terms common in the region (LC, partial advance)
- Shipping routes and freight options
Check the supplier's Alibaba/Global Sources profile for:
- Years in business (minimum 3 years)
- Trade assurance or verified supplier status
- Response rate and customer reviews
- Export volume and main markets

- Warranty terms with clear defect criteria and replacement policy

- Production updates with photos during manufacturing
