Battery–Inverter Compatibility: What CAN and RS485 Do Not Prove

Practical evidence checklists for installers and distributors.

· SH Energy editorial

A shared CAN, RS485 or 48 V label is a starting point, not a compatibility decision.

Before ordering, verify the exact inverter and battery models, their applicable firmware, electrical requirements, communication arrangement and manufacturer-supported configuration. Ask for written evidence for the proposed pairing rather than relying on a generic connector description.

Start with the exact pair you intend to buy

“Hybrid inverter plus lithium battery” is too broad for a replacement or expansion decision. Write down the existing inverter's full model designation, battery model, available revisions and firmware versions. Identify which device is being replaced and which equipment must stay.

Do not assume that a compatibility statement for a product family covers every model or that a recommendation from another site matches this installation. The evidence needs to identify the equipment and conditions that apply to your enquiry.

Four checks before requesting a quotation

Equipment identity

Record full inverter and battery model names, hardware revision where available, and supporting nameplate photos. Distinguish a confirmed model from an approximate family name.

Electrical limits

Ask the supplier and installer to verify operating voltage, charge and discharge limits, required battery configuration and the system's load requirements against the applicable specifications.

Communication support

Identify the required protocol, ports, communication device and manufacturer-specified connection arrangement. Do not select a cable or pin assignment from appearance alone.

Firmware and configuration

Check supported versions and any required system settings or supporting equipment in the model-specific documentation. Have qualified personnel determine commissioning actions.

What an official compatibility example actually contains

Victron's Dyness compatibility guidance identifies supported equipment, communication through a GX device and model-dependent firmware requirements. It also directs users to the battery supplier for battery sizing information.

That example illustrates the level of detail a compatibility check can require. It does not establish compatibility for SH Energy equipment, other battery brands or an installation outside the documented conditions. Use the original guidance for its named products and the responsible suppliers' documents for your own pairing.

Make the supplier's answer specific

Instead of asking “Does it support lithium batteries?”, send this concise evidence request. It can be used for a new system, a replacement unit or an expansion enquiry.

Proposed inverter model / revision: Proposed battery model / revision: Existing units that will remain: Known firmware versions: System country and application: Required load / backup function: Proposed battery configuration: Please provide: - The applicable model-specific compatibility document. - Required firmware and communication equipment. - Electrical limits and installation conditions. - Written confirmation for this exact pairing. - Any conditions that must be checked before quotation.

If a supplier only confirms “CAN supported”, the compatibility decision is still incomplete. Ask which exact battery model and configuration that answer covers. Save the reply with the quotation so it is available to the commissioning team.

When replacing a battery or inverter

A replacement changes only part of the system, so the retained equipment matters as much as the new unit. Identify existing monitoring or communication equipment, the intended backup circuits and what the installer needs the finished system to do. Use our RFQ checklist to describe the procurement scope.

If the enquiry started with a fault, preserve the original evidence and service response. A fault message or communication alert alone does not prove that changing a battery, inverter or cable is the correct remedy. Our spare-parts enquiry checklist helps separate observed symptoms from an approved parts requirement.

Keep the evidence with the purchase

Before committing to a pairing, retain the model specifications, compatibility reference, written supplier response and relevant installation requirements. Note any unresolved condition clearly; do not present it as an approved combination in your customer quotation.

SH Energy coordinates China-side sourcing and documentation enquiries for installers and distributors. Send the proposed equipment pair to jimmy@sunhongenergy.com, or start a model-specific support enquiry. Final compatibility and commissioning decisions remain with the responsible supplier and qualified installer.

Frequently asked questions

Does having CAN or RS485 ports prove that a battery and inverter work together?

No. Matching interface names do not prove support for the exact models, communication protocol, firmware or required system configuration. Check the manufacturers' documentation and obtain written confirmation.

Is a shared 48 V label enough to choose a replacement battery?

No. A nominal voltage label does not establish the full electrical operating limits, communication support, current requirements or approved system configuration.

What evidence should an installer request before an order?

Request the exact model and revision pairing, applicable compatibility documentation, required firmware and communication equipment, installation conditions and written supplier confirmation for the proposed configuration.

Can SH Energy guarantee compatibility across brands?

No. SH Energy can coordinate model-specific evidence and sourcing enquiries. Compatibility and commissioning must be confirmed by the responsible manufacturer, supplier and qualified installer.
